| Question Not Found Here? Please Call (309) 699-6500 |
Q: How much extra does it cost to have my building constructed on-site?
A: Nothing! The cost of construction is included in the prices you see.
Q: What do I need to do to make my site ready for you to build a storage building?
A: There is just a little bit of preparation that the customer should do to ensure a quality installation.
- We need level ground to within 8". Anything beyond that could jeopardize the stability of your building. Our installers will level the building at various points under the building with material that is resistant to rot and wood destroying insects. Many customers prefer to utilize concrete patio blocks as shimming material. The ShedQuarters can provide 8"x16" patio blocks for this use at a nominal charge or the customer can provide them after discussing required quantities with our office.
- Our installers will need approximately 2' of clearance (4' on 12' wide and larger buildings) beyond the area where the building is going to sit and approximately 4' overhead. This will allow them to properly erect walls, set ladders, etc. Our installers will not excavate, remove shrubbery, trim or prune branches, remove fencing, etc.
- Customers will need to contact local zoning authorities to determine setback distances, permitting requirements, etc. Other factors that should go into determining where you should place your building are susceptibility of the ground to accumulate water during heavy rains, septic tanks, ease of accessibility, slopes, and current landscaping. Once you have identified a location for your building, stake the building area out with four (4) stakes at each corner and a fifth stake for where you would like the center of the doors.
Q: Do I need to put down rock prior to construction?
A: Laying rock is an option that customers may choose to use as part of the ground preparation. Some use it for drainage if the area is in a low point in the yard, some use it for decorative purposes and some use it to provide a solid foundation for under the building to prevent settling. Should you decide to use rock, consult with your local landscape company to find out what is available and pricing. We would suggest a packable rock such as white rock or CA6. Avoid rock such as pea gravel and river rock as they do not pack well and your building will eventually settle into it causing many problems down the road. As always, should you have questions, consult with The ShedQuarters for additional information.
Q: Do I need a building permit?
A: Most cities and towns do not require building permits for portable storage buildings up to a specified size, however, some do. Please consult your local zoning office to determine what the regulations are for your area. Make sure that you inform them that it is a "portable storage building". If you are a member of a homeowner's association, you may need to check with them as well for permission or a list of any restrictions.
Q: What kind of paint should I use when painting my building?
A: Paint is no different than anything else that can vary in quality. Bottom line, you get what you pay for. That being said, you do want to make sure that the type of paint you use is an exterior latex. The oil based paints will not bond to the primer of the siding. Clean up is much easier with the exterior latex anyway - just soap and water!
Q: Can I have my building installed on a concrete slab?
A: Yes. If you desire to have your building installed on a slab, consult with The ShedQuarters for additional information and specifications. If you have an existing slab, we will want to do an inspection of that slab to ensure that it is in a condition that will allow us to construct a building on. If you are pouring a slab, there are specifications that the slab has to be poured to with minimal tolerances. Please understand that The ShedQuarters does not warranty slab work, any defects or leaking that may occur from a slab that is not level or square. Also, please understand that attaching your building to a slab may cause the city or town that you reside in to require you to have additional permitting and taxation on that building.
Q: Do I need to take the day off of work to be there when my building is constructed?
A: No. We understand that people work and it is sometimes difficult to get time off on such short notice. As long as we have a way to communicate with you first thing in the morning the day of the build and throughout the day in case we have questions, there is no need for you to take a day off of work. Our scheduled dates are TENTATIVE due to weather and previous job schedules. If we find that we are not going to be there due to rain, falling behind on the previous job or some other unforeseen circumstance, The ShedQuarters will contact you as soon as possible to reschedule.
